New Faves of the Television Season

October 6, 2011

One might assume I’m a fan of T.V. considering my unhealthy knowledge of a show that went off the air over ten years ago. And you’d be assuming right. But, I haven’t been interested in scripted television for years because everything has paled in comparison to the juiciness of reality Housewives and competition shows.

However, this Fall season I have found a few new favorites and I’m hoping the networks let these shows find their legs before sending them off to cancelation island. Here’s the rundown of what I’m watching:

Pan Am (Sunday, ABC)
I was a little hesitant to start this show because shows based in certain time eras don’t always appeal to me (thus, the reason why I don’t watch Mad Men either but supposedly that’s a good one, or so say the Emmy voters). In fact, Pan Am started as background noise for reading blogs the night it debuted. But, I like it. I like it a lot. Each flight attendant has their own backstory which is revealed a little with each episode and there is also the whole espionage story line they have barely touched upon. Now, Christina Ricci is the big name in the show but I think her role is totally overshadowed by Karine Vanasse (Colette, the Parisian) and Kelli Garner (Kate, the black sheep). The story lines of Colette and Kate, respectively, are the reasons why I keep tuning in for more.

Revenge (Wednesday, ABC)
So far, this is my favorite of the favorites! Emily Van Camp (from Everwood and Brothers and Sisters) plays a seemingly normal young woman – albeit uber rich and connected – living in the Hamptons for no reason other than to destroy the people that sent her father to prison when she was a child. The storyline is great so far, however…each vengeful attack is executed almost too perfectly and completed within each episode. Hey writers, drag it out a bit in case Revenge gets picked up for season two. Van Camp is great but Madeleine Stowe, who plays her new beau’s mother, is pure evil perfection. Catch up on the past three episodes online and watch this one!

Ringer (Tuesday, CW)
It’s been a long time since I’ve watched a show regularly on the CW. The last show I think I religiously watched was Felicity and that was when the CW was the WB. Wait, I watched One Tree Hill for a while too but ditched that after Hailey and Lucas left North Carolina. Anyway, I was indeed a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan and so happy to see Sarah Michelle Gellar back on network T.V. The Ringer is good. Gellar plays twin sisters Bridget and Siobhan. Bridget is on the run and Siobhan is supposedly dead. Bridget assumes Siobhan’s identity and we find out about Siobhan’s secret life at the same time Bridget does. The production of the pilot was rough…the boat scene, did you see it? But so far I’m loving the latter episodes. You even get to see Gellar do a little Buffy-esque butt kicking too. I’m worried though this one might be axed. Let’s hope not.

Suburgatory (Wednesday, ABC)
I’m a comedy lover – HIMYM, Modern Family, and Happy Endings are by far my go-to network comedies. The pilot for Suburgatory rocked. It was so freaking hilarious. Jeremy Sisto, Cheryl Hines, and Entourage’s Rex Lee – funny people. The best though is Jane Levy, who plays Tessa, a Manhattan native transplanted in suburbia after her dad suspects her of having sex. I convinced my husband to watch the second episode with me but sadly, it wasn’t as great. I hope ABC gives it a couple of weeks for Suburgatory to find its rhythm. I’ll watch again next week for sure.

Are you watching Pan Am, Revenge, The Ringer, or Suburgatory? What do you think so far? Or are you watching anything I should be watching? Let me know with a comment!

I tend to watch murder shows like The Mentalist or NCIS but I really like Royal Pains on USA. I am interested in a new show coming on in the next week or two- Storyville (or something like that). I have Pan Am on my DVR to watch. I heard a few people say it was good!
