Chris Hemsworth as Christian Grey | 50 Shades of Grey

June 5, 2012

I finally picked up 50 Shades of Grey after hearing all the chatter about it.  Truthfully, I can hardly get into it.  It’s taken me weeks – WEEKS! – to just get through the first couple of chapters.  No one character has fully drawn me in yet.  While I am intrigued in finding out what makes Christian Grey tick, I think the novel’s heroine – Anastasia Steele – is a downright snooze-fest!  Her naivety drives me bananas and the blushing…Oh.My.God already!

I’m wondering where all the naughtiness is already.  Yes, of course I want to get to the juicy stuff because that’s what everyone keeps talking about anyway.  But seriously, I can’t read three pages without wanting to go empty the dishwasher.

Now, I know a lot of my peers have written posts about who should be cast in the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey movie.  While I do like Kathleen’s choice of Henry Cavil as Grey, I personally think the gorgeous Chris Hemsworth would be fun to watch on the big screen.  I came across this photo from last weekend’s MTV Movie Awards and I thought “HOLY HOTNESS!”  Honestly, I had to Google him because I had no idea what else he’s been in.  FYI – Thor and The Avengers.  Well, it seems Mr. Hemsworth has been talked about quite a bit for this role.  Fingers crossed.

Chris Hemsworth

What about Anastasia Steele?  So many female leads have been talked about – Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel, and Kristen Stewart.  Meh.  I think these ladies are all too pretty to play Anastasia.  I envision her more…dumpy, frumpy, and mousey.  More like Lena Dunham’s character Hannah from HBO’s GIRLS.

Lena Dunham

Don’t get me wrong, I think Lena Dunham is really pretty but her GIRLS character is the epitome of dumpy, frumpy, and mousey.  Am I totally off track here?

Who do you see as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele?

I have zero desire to read this. I wanted to so badly because I want to be like the cool kids, but like you said, I’d rather empty the dishwasher!

Amy June 5, 2012 at 10:00 am

My vote would be for Ian Somerhalder (Damon from Vamprie Diaries). He is a little old, but would be perfect! And for Anastasia maybe Emma Watson? I think fanboys would come out in droves to see kinky Hermione.

Wendy June 5, 2012 at 10:35 am

Ian Somerhalder sure has a following, doesn’t he? He is hot.
Hands down, the best comment so far today: “Fanboys would come out in droves to see kinky Hermione” — HILARIOUS!

AJ June 5, 2012 at 10:01 am

I think this is GREAT casting. Also would love Maggie Gyllenhaal with Michael Fassbender.

Wendy June 5, 2012 at 10:33 am

Ooh…I don’t know who Michael Fassbender is. Google time.
Did you ever see Maggie Gyllenhaal in “Secretary”?

AJ June 5, 2012 at 10:34 am

Oh yes — that’s why I picked her!

Suzanne June 5, 2012 at 10:16 am

Oooo that’s a GREAT choice for Anna, but no way will they go that direction. I think Kristen Stewart would be hilarious, since 50 Shades started as Twilight fan fiction online and so Anna is basically BASED on Kristen. And she’s so so so totally boring, exactly like the character in the book.

I will NEVER say no to any more Chris Hemsworth in my life, but I heard Ian Sommerwhatshisface (the guys from the Vampire Diaries) wanted the part and I think he’d be fantastic.

Oh, and I will admit to reading all 3 books. They got sliiiiightly more interested (and dirty) but I’m not jumping out of my pants (heh) to recommend them to anyone.

Wendy June 5, 2012 at 10:32 am

I’m so not a fan of Kristen Stewart but I get the irony if she is indeed cast for the part. She just always looks stoned to me. And I can’t see her as anyone else after seeing her play Joan Jett.

I personally think Ian is too old. And I picture Christian as a blonde. But he does have those steely eyes!

Ok, Suzanne…on your recommendation I’ll keep plugging along on this book!

Beth June 5, 2012 at 10:33 am

No no no!

Annastasia is beautiful and doesn’t know it.. I see Amanda Seyfried – the eyes and the hair…

As for Christian.. chris pine… nom nom nom

Beth June 5, 2012 at 10:36 am

Christian is supposed to have ‘copperish’ hair… I like Ian Somerhalder also. And Emma Watson… wow.. never thought of her -but that would work…

I also don’t get you guys that don’t like them! YES, they are horribly written, but I couldn’t put it down. Not for a moment! And I’ve read sexy books before. LOL

Wendy June 5, 2012 at 10:38 am

See Beth, that’s one of my biggest problems with the books is that the writer hasn’t given us anything to believe that Ana is this beautiful girl. I only see DUMPY and AWKWARD.

Megan June 5, 2012 at 10:42 am

I skipped through and read a few passages but really just don’t care about it.

In the passages I read I envisioned her as Asian for some reason.

Wendy June 5, 2012 at 10:20 pm

Really? What gave you that idea?

Chelsea @ Someday I'll Learn June 5, 2012 at 10:49 am

Ryan Gosling ALL the way. And yeah, Anastasia is obnoxious. If she talks about him touching “her sex” one more time, I swear…oh and I really wish he would stop calling her “baby.” Blech.

Wendy June 5, 2012 at 10:25 pm

I adore Ryan Gosling. Adore.
And I hear you about the author’s use of “baby” and referring to her private parts as “her sex.” I’ve never heard that before, have you? It’s like it’s written (sometimes) for a tween!

Chelsea @ Someday I'll Learn June 5, 2012 at 10:31 pm

I think it’s one of those British terms. I’m sure if I was more worldly I’d be quite knowledgeable about these things and have all SORTS of vague nicknames for my, uh…lovebox.

Alexandra June 6, 2012 at 2:55 pm

After seeing Ryan Gosling in Crazy Stupid Love I think it should be him I haven’t read the book, but I’m gathering that it is somewhere between 9 1/2 Weeks and The Story of O. YES to seeing RG as a lead in this kind of role. 😉

Wendy June 10, 2012 at 5:18 pm

Ryan Gosling in just about anything is fine by me.

Katy June 5, 2012 at 6:08 pm

I’m literally just about to start reading it! I have 30 more pages in my current book then on that one! Wondering if I’ll even like it now though. I’ve been known to struggle to get into books most people absolutely love. I’ll let you know!

Wendy June 5, 2012 at 10:25 pm

I finally got through the boring stuff and have finally reached the juicy stuff. And oh boy is it juicy!

Carolyn West June 5, 2012 at 9:16 pm

So the funny thing is that Anastasia is annoying as hell until you get to book #3. I liked the third book the best because it actually had a decent storyline. I would vote for Ian Somerhalder in a heartbeat. For Ana I never thought of Emma Watson but now that I think about it I think the two of them would have great chemistry.

Wendy June 5, 2012 at 10:27 pm

I had a friend who said she really liked book 3! So I’m gonna keep chugging along!
Can Emma Watson do an American accent?

Carolyn West June 5, 2012 at 10:29 pm

I bet she could. I was kind of surprised that I liked 3 the best. I was sorry to see it end.

Sara @ Periwinkle Papillon June 5, 2012 at 10:30 pm

My bet is that this movie will NEVER get made. How can they? It will be porn if they do it right and no one will go see it unless, of course, they release straight to streaming video for your kindle. (Anyone see SNL?) 😉

Megan June 5, 2012 at 11:02 pm

I think because she reminded me if girls I knew inschool

Eva Smith June 6, 2012 at 2:08 am

I haven’t read the book, but William Levy would make a great Christian Grey with Sarah Jessica Parker as Anastasia Steele.

Shelby Barone June 6, 2012 at 7:28 am

I still need to find time to read this book. Maybe this summer!

Amanda ~ sunny vegan June 6, 2012 at 7:40 am

While our book club read it in January, I actually had no interest and skipped it. Maybe someday I’ll get around to it.

Wendy June 19, 2012 at 9:52 pm

You know, Amanda…it’s not THAT terrible. It’s not Jane Eyre but it is what it is. You can borrow mine if you want! I just picked up book 2.

Ashley June 6, 2012 at 1:01 pm

I loved these books. Of course they are terribly written… it’s the best beach trash EVER.
But I can’t imagine them doing ANY justice to it as a movie. Sara is totally right… it’s going to be pretty hard core porn if they do it correctly and totally LAMESAUCE if they don’t. But I must say… Thor is pretty damn delicious. :-) but too beefy to play Christian.

Wendy June 19, 2012 at 9:54 pm

I would really like to see this executed as a movie! I’m pretty sure I’ve seen some hot sex scenes in movies that still leave a lot to the imagination and I think with the right director it can be done. Did you hear that are trying to get Angelina Jolie to direct!!

Caryn B June 6, 2012 at 10:03 pm

Ooh…I’d have to read the book first before making a decision…but Hemsworth would be good in most films. LOL

Wendy June 10, 2012 at 5:16 pm

You are SO busy! I don’t know where’d you even find the time! Wait for the movie! :-)

Galit Breen June 7, 2012 at 1:02 pm

The books are GOOD, girlfriend! And your choices as leads may change once you read them!

Wendy June 10, 2012 at 5:15 pm

My choices are ALREADY changing and I’m not even done with the first book!
Speaking of books…I’ve got your collaboration in the queue. Sorry for such a long delay but considering June is cancer survivor’s month I thought it’d be fitting to share with my readers!!

Chelle June 9, 2012 at 1:55 pm

I have enjoyed reading the books! I am almost done reading the second book. I agree that Chris Hemsworth would make a great Christian Grey! Some of my other picks for Christian would be Alexander Skarsgard, Kellan Lutz, Matt Bomer, or possibly Ian Somerlander. My picks for Anastasia would be Jessica Stroup or Emmy Rossum. Emmy Rossum might be a good Leila as well.

Wendy June 10, 2012 at 5:03 pm

OMG Chelle, Alexander Skarsgard is so delicious. I’d love to see him as Christian! And Matt Bomer! Jessica Stroup isn’t a bad choice as Ana. I’m seeing Ana as an unassuming beauty. Someone you wouldn’t stop and say “THAT girl is gorgeous!,” you know what I mean?

Rae June 9, 2012 at 3:16 pm

Chris Hemsworth is perfect for christian’s role….with Nina Dobrev.
he is all christian…

Wendy June 10, 2012 at 5:01 pm

Hey Rae! Thanks for commenting!
I had to Google Nina Dobrev. She’s beautiful.

Jennifer D June 9, 2012 at 11:49 pm

Read all 3 books is one week!! Love!!! And basically obsessed now!!! I WILL be in lone at midnight to see the movie! My vote for Christian is Ian S for sure!! He’s exactly what I picture, and for Ana ( who I dont think is boring at all!) would be either Alexis Bledel or the roommate from Girls (not sure of her name).

Wendy June 10, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Hey Jennifer – thanks for stopping by! I’m almost done with the first book and my original thoughts on the cast are SO different now! I would love to see Alexis Bledel in the role of Ana. Alexis is very pretty and I’d really like to see her in an edgy role to finally break out of her Rory Gilmore cast. I’m still not on the Ian train yet though. Maybe it’s because I haven’t seen him in anything. Maybe time for Netflix something!

Jill June 13, 2012 at 7:22 pm

Chris Hemsworth would be perfect.. Christian is supposed to be striking and Hemsworth is probably the most attractive option..you are way off on Anastasia.. In the book she is a little drab but she is supposed to be beautiful(not that ur pic isnt). My vote is for Kstew but I doubt Hemsworth and Kstew will do another movie together. They are snow white costars..

Wendy June 19, 2012 at 9:57 pm

Oh, yes..I’ve realized I’m totally off on my original choice for Anastasia. The author writes so much about what Christian looks like but barely anything about Ana except for her brown hair. I’m even reconsidering my Hemsworth choice!!

Tree June 17, 2012 at 2:14 pm

Reading this post made me feel as though I was reading my thoughts out loud. I completely agree that Chris Hemsworth should play Christian Grey. The only difference I would make is that Allison Williams who plays Marnie in Girls should be casted as Anastasia Steele. She seems to fit the description very well.

Wendy June 19, 2012 at 9:58 pm

Yay for siding with me on Hemsworth! Thought I might be reconsidering. Allison Williams might be a good choice too…she’s beautiful. I wonder if she’s do all the nudity!

Ev June 23, 2012 at 9:45 am

Chris Hemsworth pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

DulceM June 26, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Chris Hemsworth is the perfect Christian Grey! Gosh is too obvious! Iam somerhalder is cute but he’s not like Grey at all… Christian is so tall and big.. amd a very worked body… and iam is to skinny… not like Christian…

kelley June 28, 2012 at 10:11 am

I would like to see Hemsworth as Christian, totally fits the part, and maybe Lucy Hale from Pretty Little Liars. She is young, and innocent, everything that Ana is!! Hope someone else agrees. Ian is too skinny and too old. No to Kristin Stewart, she does always look stoned, and she is a bad girl. LUCY HALE yall!!!! She is your girl!!!!

Alex July 1, 2012 at 7:29 pm

I think Chris Hemsworth is perfect for the role! But I think your off with Ana, she’s not supposed to be ugly, she thinks little of herself but everybody else insists that she’s beautiful. She’s supposed to have blue eyes, dark hair and what not. Doesn’t sound frumpy or mousey to me. Lena has none of her characteristics. I think Olivia Wilde would be perfect :) Blake lively should be Katherine!

Alex July 1, 2012 at 7:32 pm

Lucy hale would be great too, I totally agree! Scratch off olivia! Haha.

Alex July 1, 2012 at 7:34 pm

And totally agreed about Ian he’s to old.

Chris Hemsworth as Christian Grey July 26, 2012 at 6:13 pm

I believe 100% that CHRIS HEMSWORTH would make an aMaZiNg Christian Grey.
Check out the site I started, just for this reason.
